Visit Växjö

by Melissa Atienza-Petri on October 27th, 2007

Previously Featured Destinations on Sounds Greek to Me: Rzeszów

The category Sounds Greek to Me is all about destinations with names which are difficult to pronounce and/or spell for English-speakers. Places featured are served by budget airlines.

Växjö is a small charming university town located right in the middle of southern Sweden, Småland.

vaxjo

First off, how the hell do you pronounce all those letters with those dots on top?! English speakers would probably guess that it would be something like vaxjoe, right? It’s not. It’s more along the lines of vek-fwoo. Best to ask a local when you to Växjö, torture your tongue a bit trying to say it right.

Since it’s a university town, it would be best NOT to visit during vacation time since everyone (the students) would probably be vacationing elsewhere.

Getting Around: Your feet will be enough to get you around the center of town. You can explore the rest of the city by bicycle or by bus.

What to do: Like all the other tourists in Växjö, you can visit the house of the Emigrants, the Cathedral, the Glass Museum, Teleborg Castle and the Echo Temple. If the weather is nice, walk around the lakes for some great “me” time.

Where to Stay: They have hundreds of cottages to offer. Travel during the off season and book your cottage only when you get there to save 400 Swedish Kronas for reserving outside Sweden.

To Get There: RyanAir will take you there from Germany. You can also get to Växjö by train from Stockholm, Copenhagen or Gothenburg, there are buses linking the airports with the train stations in each of these cities.
