Urban Beaches in Europe

by Melissa Atienza-Petri on July 7th, 2005

Desperate times call for desperate measures. And in this case, the vehement call of urbanites who do not have the money and the time to go on a summer holiday has been answered.

The cities of Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels, Budapest, Rome, Frankfurt and Berlin have trucked in tons of sand to urban riverfronts to create the feeling of a lazy day at the shore. Locals and tourists in these big European cities can now go to the beach immediately after work or a morning of museum hopping.

A huge success, based on the number of people you see in these artificial installations. City dwellers and tourists alike are donning their bathing suits, basking under the sun.

Who says urban beaches would not make a great (and cheaper, to boot!) alternative?!

Heh, we have a city beach in Milano as well, right in front of my house… It’s on the papers every other day, but nothing as they want it to look!
