Upon arriving at the Vienna airport

by Melissa Atienza-Petri on November 22nd, 2005

When you are tired and jetlagged after a long trip, taking a taxi upon arrival at the airport makes a lot of sense. No hassling bus routes and train maps to figure out. However, taxis are the most expensive of public land transportation. Not to mention the fact that taxi drivers all over the world have the reputation of overcharging unsuspecting tourists.

Fortunately, in most European countries, there are other ways to get yourself to your hotel. It may not be as hassle-free as taxis but, at least, you can keep to your budget.

One fine example for today is getting to/from Vienna airport to/from the city center.

Taxi (for the sake of comparison) costs around 30Euros.

CAT. It’s like a normal train (S-bahn) but it’s a lot nicer and it doesn’t stop in other stations. It’s a dedicated train service from Wien Mitte (Vienna Center) and the Airport. It runs every 30 minutes (xx:05 and xx:35). If you buy it on the train itself, it costs 10Euros. If you buy it on the machine before going down the station level, it’s 9Euros. If you buy a return ticket, it costs 16Euros.

Airport Bus to Schweden Platz. You can find it right outside the arrival area. It costs 6Euros; 11Euros if roundtrip.

Cheapest option would be…

To take the S-Bahn 7 to Wien Mitte (right where the CAT also stops) and Wien Nord. It will only cost 5.85Euros.
