Traveling from London Airports
There are 4 “London” Airports: Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton and Stansted. Interestingly, none of which are really located in London. Heathrow is in Middlesex, Gatwick is in Sussex, Luton is in Bedfordshire and Standsted is in Essex.
So when you arrive, you need to figure out a way to get to London from those places.
It is always very convenient to arrive at the airport and have someone pick you up. It is also less of a hassle if you can just head for the nearest exit and hail a taxi. However, if you don’t have a local friend or if your budget is limited, you have no other option but to take the cheaper (if not, the cheapest) option:
From Heathrow: You can take the Heathrow Express for £14.50. The cheapest option, of course, would be to take the Underground’s Picadilly line which could cost from £1.50, depending on which zone you will get off.
From Gatwick: You can take the Gatwick Express for £14.00. Or, as Tom of Flycheapo has advised, “it is cheaper to get a Southern Railway train between Gatwick and London - just £9. Trains run every 15 minutes for most of the day, and take only a few minutes longer than the Gatwick Express trains.”
From Luton: You can take the Thameslink train which links with 13 London Underground stations.
From Stansted: You can take the Stansted Express train for £25.00. Or, you can take the coach (Terravision or National Express) for around half the price.
Unfortunately, the tube does not serve Gatwick, Luton and Stansted so transportation to London from those 3 airports are more expensive than if you are coming from Heathrow.
