Europe String

Top Cheap European Destinations

by Melissa Atienza-Petri on April 20th, 2006

USA Today featured what they think are ten under priced and on-the-rise European citiesMost of the cities mentioned in the article were included in my past itineraries.  And I do have some comments regarding their “picks for the 10 cities that should make your ‘must-visit’ list”.  Here they are:

Dubrovnik.  I agree 100%.  In addition, I would like to reiterate that the cheapest accommodation option would be to opt for home-stayAnother city which I can highly recommend for budget travellers is Split.

In my humble opinion, Bruges should not be included in this list. I am not really convinced with the reason for its inclusion -> “This is still Western Europe, so prices are more expensive than some of the other cities featured here, but cheaper options do exist.” That could apply to all European destinations, even the pricier city of Paris.

Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina.  The flights to Sarajevo, if you are coming from Western Europe, is a bit too pricey for the budget traveller.  And, in my opinion, the place (I travelled from Sarajevo to Mostar, Banja Luka and past Medjugorge) has a long way to go before it can even be considered a top European travel destination.

Mark Kahler’s European Bargain Destinations article over at About.com is, in my opinion, a better and more realistic guide for those who are planning to backpack it around Europe this summer.

My two cents.
