Tip of the Day: To market to market to buy a fat pig

by Melissa Atienza-Petri on June 21st, 2007

Portobello Road MarketYes, do follow Mother Goose’s advise when you visit another foreign country. Of course, you need not follow Mother Goose to the letter by buying a fat pig (besides, even if you are willing to buy one, it will probably be out of your budget range).

What will you get out of it?

A trip to the local market will expose you to the local culture. Imagine all that haggling going on between the sellers and the possible buyers. Think of all those goods — some of them may even be strange — that you would be seeing there. Check out the local produce which are most likely cheaper than if you buy them nicely prepared at that restaurant near your hostel.

The limit is only up to your imagination.

Frommer’s has singled out Spitalfields and Portobello Road Markets in London, Les Halles Centrales in Avignon and the Central Market Hall in Budapest. Whether small or big, clean or dirty, you will definitely wherever you may be headed.

You can read the whole article from Frommers here.
