The Tumbleweed Hotel
Do you love intellectual conversations? Are you a voracious reader? If so, Tumbleweed Hotel could be THE hotel for you — dear budget traveler — when you go to Paris.
The Tumbleweed hotel is the name given to the second floor of a bookshop where beds are placed amongst books. If chosen, guests of this hotel stay for free provided that they do one hour of chores each day (like dusting and sweeping) or they can profess their love for books by reading one.
There’s another condition, though… as soon as the bookshop opens, you have to get out of bed. Not a bad deal, eh?
So how do you get chosen to stay at this interesting kind of accommodation? Well, writers and book lovers who are in need of a place to stay are invited. Boohooo for me, I didn’t get invited. Perhaps, it was because I had a kid in tow. hehe
Tumbleweed Hotel is on the second floor of Shakespeare and Company, owned by George Whitman. It is located on the left bank, across the Seine from Notre Dame.

What a clever idea but I wonder if they have a hard time waking up some of the guests lol… guess it depends on what time the store opens. :)

Mr. Whitman is a wonderful man. I’m glad to hear he is still at it, he’s 94 years old now!
He used to have these fabulous tea parties on Sundays that were almost as much fun as the Mad Hatter’s.
Shakespeare and Company is one of my favorite places in the world, though I never stayed there, it was good to know that it was around.
Whitman’s daughter Sylvia now runs the day to day events there.
May it forever remain a shrine to books and booklovers, and a tumbleweed’s resting place.

Hi!
Do you know how I can apply for a stay?
I mean, it’s a little bit risky to apply on the spot, if they don’t take me… that would be very unpleasant :(
Best thanks,
Anna

Same as Anna, I would love to find out how to apply! Im just a poor little 17 year old American girl who loves books and Paris with a ridiculous passion. This summer Im heading to Paris but I really only have enough money for the plane ticket and some food…Staying at this store would be like residing in heaven on Earth for a night!
Any more application or contact info for me? I looked on the website but it doesnt say anything about applying or an email address, etc.
