Europe String

Splurge, if you must…

by Melissa Atienza-Petri on September 25th, 2006

The cost of food can easily wreck your travel budget. There are ways to save and keep our food budget to a minimum while traveling however, there are also times when you just want to have at least one great meal which could complete your European experience.

If so, splurge (cost is relative!) on a meal or two.

And if you do, keep in mind that:

  • You should do so at lunch, instead of dinner. Lunch in expensive restaurants are cheaper.

  • Look for a place which locals frequent. It says a lot about the quality and chances are, the price may not be as outrageous as some expensive tourist trap restaurants.
  • Don’t order the house wine. It will be ridiculously expensive.
  • If you do drink wine and you plan on drinking more than a couple of glasses, order by the bottle. It would be cheaper that way.

Interesting advice on the house wine, and contrary to what I’m told by friends who are in the food and beverage industry.

I’ve always been told that the house wine is usually a good buy, and fairly priced.

The worst buy? The second lowest priced wine on the menu. No one wants to look cheap by buying the least expensive, so they go up one step. That’s the bottle with the highest markup and profit margin.

generally, the cheaper wines have a higher mark up than the more expensive ones. However, as per my experience (at least here in teh EU), the mark up for house wines are a lot more, in comparison to the rest on the list.
