No Guided Tours, please

by Melissa Atienza-Petri on October 14th, 2005

“With the cost of sightseeing tours constantly rising, travelers all over the world are turning to the free-of-charge, self-guided walking tour as their means of becoming acquainted with a large city,” reports SFGate.

Self-guided tours cut costs of city sightseeing, the headline says. Duh?! Am I the only one who has always done it this way?

All my trips abroad always meant buying a map, doing research about my destination — will sometimes purchase a book, if I want to splurge or will browse online, if I am being thrifty — discover the cities I am visiting on my own. Besides, I have always associated guided tours for people who have difficulties moving on their own.

If you want to travel on a budget, get your ass moving. You need to do your research, walk and if needed, queue up.

Hubby & I have always preferred self-guided tours. Hubby’s an expert tour planner. And, things work out much better because we get to see "non-touristy" places and such.

We only join "short guided tours" (day trips/half day trips) when we’re already in a city/town and we only have a day or so in that place — and hiring a car and/or taking public transport would cost too much or take too much time.
