Munich’s Glockenspiel: a ho hum experience
Every day at 11:00 and 12:00, tourists gather in Munich’s Marienplatz and gaze upwards at the Glockenspiel. This mechanical puppet show features life-sized figures dancing, jousting, and milling about with no discernable purpose.
While I’ve never gone out of my way to see it, I have coincidently found myself at Marienplatz just as the show was beginning on more than one occasion. While it’s mildly amusing, I wouldn’t place it high on my to-do list if I only had a few days in Munich. For example, you could be drinking beer instead (11:00am beers are completely acceptable here)…

I know it’s touristy, but I have to admit I loved seeing the puppet show at the Glockenspiel when I was in Munich two years ago.
It didn’t really take much time out of my day, and it was one of those things I’d never be able to see back here in New York.

I’m glad to hear you enjoyed it, Miley. I figure some people must, or there wouldn’t be so many folks there to watch each day. Maybe I’m just jaded. :)

I was stationed in Nue Ulm for 3 years. That’s about a 30 minute (?) train ride from Munich. We would take a long weekend visit at least once every other month. I loved the city. But you’re right, the Glockenspiel really isn’t what you go there for. You really should enjoy the Marienplatz tho. We would go there all the time, lol, on our way to the Hofbräuhaus.
