Liverpool, England is the European Capital of Culture 2008. Each year a different European city is named the “Capital of Culture” and celebrates by throwing a huge 12-month party complete with concerts, sporting events, special exhibitions and the like. Let’s take a look at what Liverpool has on offer for the second half of the year.

If you ar406561124_0a240c7621e looking to sample some regional cuisine; visit the Wirral Food and Drink Festival August 24-25. “Home Grown” is the theme, so expect lots of producers, restaurants, chefs and farms from the area. Special events include a cheese and wine marquee and celebrity chef demonstrations.

Throughout the month of September, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra will celebrate British musicians with the Festival of British Music 2. Witness a combination of classical British masterpieces with works from up-and-coming composers.

Heritage Open Days will see hundreds of public buildings in Liverpool and surrounding cities open to the public for free. Running from September 11-21, there will also be an accompanying program of walks, tours and family activities.

The weekend of October 31-November 2 brings the Free Thinking Festival. Speeches and debates take center stage with a variety of people, from artists to scientists offering up their opinions. The major theme for this year’s festival is Freedom.

If a trip to the UK is in your fall travel plans, you might want to add in a couple days in Liverpool; the city is buzzing with excitement and events. And if it’s too late to get there this year – start making plans for 2009. Next year, two cities will share the title: Linz, Austria and Vilnius, Lithuania.
