It’s Cheaper in Uppsala
Stockholm was, as expected, expensive. To save on cash, it would do you good to head for the nearby (70km away) Uppsala, one of Sweden’s oldest city, after you have gone around Stockholm.
There are good budget accommodations in Uppsala. In addition, it is relatively easy to find cheap eats since prices are catered for the big student population.
To get to Uppsala from Stockholm, take the Swebus Express or the SJ trains.
One of the good cheap fastfood places in Uppsala is Saffet’s. Unlike McDonalds, the have more than just french fries and burgers. At Saffet’s, you can also order baked potatoes and fish and chips. Surprisingly, their menu also includes kebabs and enchiladas. It’s a fast food after every taste.
If you compare the price of french fries (pommes frites), McDonald’s cost 379Skr wherease at Saffet’s, it only costs 306Skr. Saffet’s is at Stora Torget 1.

Uppsala is nice town but bit away from Stockholm. There are cheaper options in outskirts e.g. Ibis. Also try scandinavianpackages.com to book as per your budget.

I know this is a bit late considering the article was posted in 2006, but I just thought I’d add this for the benefit of anyone who stumbles upon the page. The link you posted to Aftonbladet isn’t for the price of fries, it’s for the level of acrylamide in micrograms found in the food listed. A value meal at McDonald’s which includes a drink and fries is usually between SEK 50:- to SEK 65:-. There are a lot of cheap places to eat in Stockholm as well, a typical lunch buffet on the weekdays will run from SEK 60:- to SEK 120:-, and pizzerias near universities usually offer pizza with salad, bread, a drink and coffee for SEK 50:- to SEK 60:-.
