Home Stay in Bulgaria

by Melissa Atienza-Petri on May 21st, 2006

When in Bulgaria and you plan to venture out of Sofia, the capital city, consider staying in private homes.  It’s considerably cheaper than staying in hotels. Think 40-60% less!

With private home rentals, apart from saving money, you get to see the real Bulgaria, as well.   Hostels are also way cheaper than hotels (obviously) but your options are limited if you choose to go out of Sofia.

Check out Travellerspoint for availability in the areas you plan to visit.

I’m married to a Bulgarian and I spend the summer there. Sofia isn’t the tourist area that the Black Sea cities of Varna and Burgas are. And the winter ski locals obviously.

The major problem is that Bulgarian Culture mostly happens in the villages, which I love but many people would find uncomfortable. In our village house, for example, we have running water, but the toilet is still an outhouse. Luckily, the surrounding woods, clean air and quiet make up for the lack of convenience.

[…] I am trying to pre-write a number of posts in case I have difficulty getting online and doing research while in Bulgaria with the kids for the summer. […]
