Getting Around Warsaw

by Melissa Atienza-Petri on September 6th, 2007

GuestBlogger:  Karyn Lesniewski is half-American, half-Polish student who is trying to get to know her roots. She is now couchsurfing in Warsaw.

Warsaw is in Poland. And Poland is in Eastern Europe.  Okay, now that the very basic Geography lesson is done with, let’s move on.

I have yet to discover the other parts of Europe but I have heard from my other American room mate that Poland is way cheaper than all those countries in Western Europe.  It’s true. But that does not mean that I would stop trying to get even better deals. I have only been here for a week but I have already learned a lot. For today, I will share with you tips on how to go around cheaply in Warsaw:

I have done a lot of walking but it does get tiring if you have to stay here for more than 5 days. So if I know that I would be seeing a lot of places, I usually take public transportation. If you are going to be out for the whole day, it will do you good to get a 24-hour unlimited pass (can be used on trams, metros and buses) for only 7.20PLN. Make sure that you get your ticket punched in one of those little orange and brown boxes otherwise, you might get in trouble.

If you have to take a taxi, make sure that you don’t flag them down. Instead, ask someone to call for a taxi so you can save yourself some money. It’s 30% cheaper that way.
