Dining in Tuscany (reminiscing)
This entry has been re-posted for a certain contest.
Before I type in all my hand-written notes about the fabulous deals the towns of Pisa, Lucca, Florence, Fiesole, Siena, Viareggio and San Gimignano have to offer, let me first give you a general guideline/advice of how to handle hunger pangs when touring around the Tuscan region.
Along with the oohs and ahhs of seeing Tuscany, you will have the grrs and brrs of your stomach to deal with. As excited as you are, you will definitely feel hunger especially with all the walking around you need to do.
You know what we did? We decided to combine the oohs and ahhhs as we got rid of our grrrs and brrs. We ate at those restaurants right smack in the middle of the most famous tourist spot. Four times!

Keep this in mind if you are traveling on a budget: DO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE THAT WE DID!
A quick glance at the menu may give you an impression that the prices are reasonable. Well, those for the main meals are. But, you might get the shock of your life once you get the final bill. The cost of drinks is out of this world and then there’s service charge on top of all that.
So, on those days when you want to eat within your budget…
- Do NOT eat in that quaint little restaurant in tourist-infested areas.
- Do check the Menu to make sure
- The further away you are from the main tourist site, the cheaper the food gets. In Florence, a pizzeria just a street away meant food are 50% cheaper than from those right across the Giotto. And yes, even those take-away stands could be expensive if it is right where all the tourists are.
To be in Tuscany gives you a rare chance to experience first-hand the world-renowned local cuisine. To do this, there is absolutely no need to go way beyond your budget.
