Check in at Ikea

by Melissa Atienza-Petri on July 30th, 2007

IkeaApparently, Ikea is more than just the H&M of furniture in Norway. Ikea stores are actually a part of Norway’s must-sees.

I may be too late with this news… but Ikea is (or has) temporarily turning one of its stores in Norway into a hostel. 30 shoppers will be picked for a chance to stay at the Ikea shop for a night, have some Kotbullar (Swedish meatballs) and get cozy wearing Ikea bathrobes. Yes, all that for FREE.

They better be free… I mean, who would pay to stay inside an Ikea store for the night, right?

Anyway… as I mentioned, this may have already happened (repored by the Guardian for the end of this month so…) so too late for dear budget travelers in Norway. Well… do keep your eyes and ears open when you do travel again where Ikea stores abound.

PROS:

  • FREE Accommodation for a night
  • FREE Dinner
  • FREE Breakfast
  • You can take home the bedsheet you used

CONS:

  • Check-in is at 10pm
  • You have to be up and about before they open at 10am

I’m kind of torn between… what a great idea and what a dumb one. While it wouldn’t appeal to me, I’m sure that there are those who would think that it would be tons of fun. And it is free…

I think I might do it just for the novelty of it. I know how easy it is to get lost inside IKEA and accidentally spend half the day there, so why not a whole day? Heh.
