Cheap eats in Budapest

by Melissa Atienza-Petri on December 14th, 2005

In General, price level in Budapest is bargain-basement compared to its wealthier neighbors.  Despite the already low prices, it certainly wouldn’t hurt if you could save a few more Euros.

Beat those hunger pangs without worrying about the cost. A few Hungarian terms would do your pocket AND stomach a lot of good.

When looking for a place to eat, look for the following:

  • etkezde - small family run bistros which specializes in lunchtime dishes; cheap and unpretentious home-style cooking. One can can even order a half-sized portion
  • önkiszolgalo - a self-service canteen which serves local food at a low price
  • szendvicsbar - selling sandwiches to go

If you are in a hurry or aren’t that hungry, you can just look for the word pek (baker).  The baker has a variety of food to go and they are cheap.

And when in doubt, you can always go to McDonald’s.

For specifics on where to go, check out Ben’s Cheap Eats.  I can actually vouch for about a quarter of those in the list.

I’ve yet to go to Budapest. But I guess if I ever get out that way, I’ll have to remember this tip. I know cheap eats anywhere are good to know.
