Fast food from a machine in Amsterdam

Just when you thought fast food couldn’t get any more efficient: the Dutch chain Febo offers burgers, croquettes, chicken wings and more… all out of vending machines. There are over 20 Febo locations in Amsterdam, and over 50 in the Netherlands.

Today’s post brought to you by the letter ‘T’

There’s another Theme Day coming up here at b5’s Travel & Culture Channel, and the theme is the letter ‘T’. In that spirit, here are my favorite European destinations which begin with T:
Ticino - this southern, Italian-speaking region of Switzerland is the best of both worlds: clean and well-organized like Switzerland, passionate and full of […]

Nymphenburg Palace in Munich

Last weekend a friend and I headed to the Nymphenburg Palace in Munich. This tourist attraction is easy to reach - take tram 17 north from the main train station for about a 15 minute ride.
The weather has been ridiculously warm and sunny here in Munich this month, and the grounds of the palace were […]

Venice: an expensive city where the charm is free

While Venice does boast some world-class museums and churches, everyone knows its real charm lies in its canals and architecture. I’ve been to this watery city more time than I can count, and my favorite visits are always those when I just spend the day getting lost while wandering through the city’s charming, narrow streets.
Hotels […]

Queen’s Day - painting the Netherlands Orange

I had a fabulous time at Queen’s Day in Amsterdam last week, on April 30th. Queen’s Day is a huge celebration of the (former) queen’s birthday, and there is fun to be had all over the country.
In Amsterdam, DJs and bands were set up on stages all over the city on the evening before Queen’s […]

Travel reading: A Widow for One Year

As I’ve mentioned before, I sometimes like to match my leisure reading to my travel destination. If you’re a fan of John Irving, you might be interested in A Widow for One Year, which is partially set in Amsterdam.
There’s also his classic The World According to Garp, which has several scenes in Vienna. As one […]

Niki de St. Phalle’s Tarot Garden

The highlight (well, one of several) of my recent trip to Italy was a visit to the Giardino dei Tarocchi, a whimsical, creative sculpture-filled garden created by the artist Niki de Saint Phalle. The garden is a bit of a drive north from Rome (or south from Siena), making it somewhat out-of-the-way for most tourists. […]
