Budget Lodging in Split, Croatia

by Melissa Atienza-Petri on November 22nd, 2005

5 reasons why you should visit Croatia:

  • The adriatic Sea is beautiful and warm, surrounded by hundreds of islands, picturesque old towns and great dive sites.
  • Mediterranean climate and flora of the Adriatic Sea coast
  • Beautiful mountains and nature wonders
  • Friendly natives
  • And the best of all, prices are a lot lower than its Western neighbors.

The seaport of Split, designated by UNESCO as a cultural treasure, lies on the Dalmatian coast. Its palm-lined oceanfront promenade is reminiscent of the French Riviera, but the rest of the old city reveals a striking combination of Roman, Venetian and Hapsburg influences.

    BUDGET Options…
Most hotels in Split are targetting business travelers. So, you can imagine the kind of prices they have. For the budget conscious, you can opt for private accommodations offered by the locals.

How to find them? As soon as you arrive in Split, there will be tons of women waiting for travelers like you in bus/train/boat stations. They offer rooms in their own homes for around 100KN. Not bad, at all

      Hi!

I’m planning a trip to Craotia over the summer and I’d like to know a little bit more about being hosted by the locales. How reliable is it? I know it’s mostly case-by-case, but are those offers worth it and is the quality relatively even from one local to another…?

      Thanks!

      Hi Julien,

I have yet to try that option but I will check my “sources” ;-) I hope to post something for you before your trip. In any case, you can also mail me at melissa@b5media.com if you need to ask a few more questions.

Good choice. Croatia is beautiful… and cheaper than its neighbors.

[…] Another city which I can highly recommend for budget travellers is Split. In my humble opinion, Bruges should not be included in this list. I am not really convinced with the reason for its inclusion -> “This is still Western Europe, so prices are more expensive than some of the other cities featured here, but cheaper options do exist.” That could apply to all European destinations, even the pricier city of Paris. Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina.  The flights to Sarajevo, if you are coming from Western Europe, is a bit too pricey for the budget traveller.  I travelled from Sarajevo to Mostar, Banja Luka and past Medjugorge.  And, in my opinion, the place has a long way to go before it can even be considered a top European travel destination.  […]
