Europe String

Better than travelling on a shoestring

by Melissa Atienza-Petri on April 12th, 2006

What is better than travelling on a shoestring?   Travelling for free!!!

Not even the best airline or hotel deal could ever beat going off somewhere where you do not have to pay or consider the paltry amount of $ you have in your pocket.  Of course, you have to do a lot of research, be lucky with the timing and have patience in order to score the best travel deal ever. And no, travelling with mom and dad does not count.

Budget Travel Online just did the research for all of us.  With The Ultimate Guide to Free Travel, you get 9 ways to score a free trip!

  1. House-Sitting.  Take up residence in someone else’s home
  2. Hiking Trail Volunteers. Get fresh air without paying for it
  3. Sister City Exchanges. Spend time with family you never knew you had.
  4. Workampers. Use your TV to get from one job to the next
  5. Driveways. Go on a road trip to someone else’s car
  6. Hospitality Exchanges. Crash on couches and make friends along the way
  7. Volunteer Farm Workers. Trade a day in the fields for room and board
  8. Rotary Club Trips. Network your way to somewhere exciting
  9. Home swapping. Exchange houses and live like a local.

Check out the complete details here.

Okay, okay, most of them aren’t exactly free since you would have to do something in exchange but, hey, at least you wouldn’t have to give them money. I do not think any travel agent would give you a free ticket if you offer to sweat it out for them.
