An afternoon in Delft, Holland
One of our stops on our recent trip to the Netherlands was the small city of Delft. Even though the sky was gray for most of the day, the town center was bustling and lively, partially thanks to the large outdoor market which snaked through the middle of town (the market is on every Thursday and Saturday). Delft is known for its blue and white porcelain and also as the home of the famous 17th century artist Vermeer.
We had lunch at one of the cafes lining the main square and then wandered around for a few hours, taking in the giant churches, adorable houses, charming canals, and touristy shops. Although we didn’t have a chance to visit it this trip, the Vermeer Center looks like something I would really enjoy. Guess I need to go back!
Delft is easy to reach by train from other locations in Holland - about an hour from Amsterdam and only about 10 minutes from Rotterdam. Trains run often enough that planning ahead is hardly necessary. Delft was definitely a nice place to spend an afternoon or a day (having come across a great Belgian beer bar, we would have been happy to spend the evening there, too!).
