Europe String

AirHitch

by Melissa Atienza-Petri on December 2nd, 2005

All of you have probably seen people thumb up rides to get to their next destination. Although, hitchhiking isn’t really what your mothers would recommend due to safety reasons, you may one day find yourself hitchhiking to your next European destination. If and when that occurs, it always is best to be prepared.

Check out hitchhikingguide.org for General info on hitchhiking in Europe. Apparently, hitching is relatively safe in this continent.

DID YOU KNOW that in the Netherlands they even have Liftersplaats, official hitch-hiking sites?

DID YOU KNOW that you can also hitch rides on commercial jets?

It doesn’t mean you can start hanging out at the airport to thumb your way to another country. Obviously, it’s done in a different way… with a different catch.

You don’t know the specific day on which you’ll leave or the precise city in Europe to which you’ll fly until you actually fly — because you catch your flight based on the information Airhitch® provides just a day or two before you’ve told them you’d be ready to leave (although they usually — repeat, usually — get you to the place you’ve specified).”

Airhitch® is the perfect solution for budget travellers with flexible schedules and adventurous spirits. Check it out.

Hi Melissa — when my MIL was in her late teens to early 20s, she hitch hiked her way through Europe! She was quite the adventurous woman in her younger days! Amazing, really!

am bowing in reverence to your MIL as I type… hehe.

Man, that must have been fun. Do you know if they had less crazy people, serial killers during that time?! haha

    Dear Melissa,

    1. We’re glad you saw fit to tell ppl about our work.

    2. Re the liftplaatsen in Holland: the German government goes them one better! In every major German city (and a few minor ones, even) there is something called a mitfahrzentrale — ridesharing/hitchhiking center — which actually matches drivers up with riders, under the sponsorship of the government.

    3. There is slight error in the way our name is spelled in certain places on your page (in other places it’s spelled correctly)…you might want to correct it for the sake of accuracy, especially because, there are several “cheap imitation knockoffs” of Airhitch® on the Web, trying to capitalize on our philosophy and approach for commercial purposes (note that Airhitch® was started — long before there was an Internet — and has continued to bemaintained, not for commercial purposes, but rather for the sociopolitical purpose of EXTENDING UNSTRUCTURED TRAVEL OPPORTUNITES to below the elite level of society).
