Which websites do you have bookmarked for your budget travel planning? I obsessively check probably way too many…just in case. And I’m not very good at seeing a bargain price and snatching it – which is what has to be done as unfortunately, the truly cheap prices appear and disappear way too quickly. Here, I share some of my favorite go-to-first sites.
For airfares, if I’m totally flexible, I’ll visit SkyScanner to find out when the cheapest time to go. If I know when I want to go, I always check Kayak and then finding the cheapest price go to the offered airline’s website to see what they’d give me. If I’m traveling in Europe, I also look to WeGoLo which is a booking agent for the budget carriers in Europe.
For hotels, I usually hit TripAdvisor first for some suggestions. I have had good luck with Venere; they offer reviews as well and I like that I can pay in the local currency when I checkout. A new web site, TFT Hostels promises to search all the hostel search engines to find the best price.
I’ve never used it, but TripIt looks useful, especially if you have a complicated itinerary or are planning a long journey. It allows you to gather all important info into one place: Flights, hotels, reservations, sightseeing ideas, etc.
Other general websites I love include Rick Steves (my personal hero) and tourist bureau websites. It’s obviously promotional, but they are for the most part up-to-date and their job is to create interesting itineraries. Read more about using tourism bureaus in your planning here.
And what are your “must check” sites?
