Low-cost airline review: AirBerlin

ABDetailI flew AirBerlin (from Munich to Berlin and back) a couple weeks ago, and overall found the experience pretty good. For a low-cost airline, AirBerlin’s service was very pleasant and efficient.

Seats are not assigned at ticket purchase, but rather when you check in. Online check-in opened at 6:00 PM the evening before my flights, and by checking in during those first hours, I had my pick of seats (I chose the bulkhead both times – more leg room!).

Other than the seat assignment thing, I can’t think of anything that marked AirBerlin as a no-frills type of airline. A non-alcoholic beverage and snack were complimentary (even on my short flights, with about an hour of flying time). Complementary magazines (including Playboy!) and newspapers were available on board, and each passenger received a chocolate on the way out.

I also really liked the ticket-purchasing interface on AirBerlin’s website. It shows the price for each flight on the day you choose as well as the days before and after, so finding the perfect time/price combination is easy. AirBerlin offers flights to many destinations in Europe, as well as some trans-Atlantic flights. I will definitely fly with AirBerlin again.

Thanks for the review! I wrote about my experience on RyanAir at my site a couple weeks ago. I think it’s good to know what you’re getting into when you get a ticket on European budget airlines.
    Keep up the good blogging!

It’s amazing how much services and amenities vary from airline to airline, isn’t it?
