Happy St. Patrick’s Day from Europe String

If you can’t make it to Ireland’s festivities, I hope you at least get to enjoy a little green beer and Irish folk music today. I celebrated with a little Irish cheddar and stout fondue myself.

Free art viewing at the Kunsthaus in Zurich

Free art viewing at the Kunsthaus in Zurich

Zurich’s most prominent art museum, the Kunsthaus , has free entry on Wednesdays. The free entry only applies to the main collection; special exhibits cost extra no matter which day you go.
The collection at the Kunsthaus is quite nice – definitely worth a visit if you find yourself in Zurich. European 19th and 20th century art is the main focus, with well-represented artists such as Giacometti, Munch, Picasso, Monet, and others.
The Kunsthaus is a short walk from the middle of downtown Zurich. It can also be reached by tram 3 from the main train station or tram 9 from Paradeplatz …read more

Travel reading: When in Rome

Travel reading: When in Rome

I love reading books during my travels that are somehow connected to my destination. I’m not talking about travel guides, but rather pleasure reading to entertain me on planes, trains, or simply while soaking in the atmosphere at a local cafe. Fiction or non-fiction, books set in the city I’m exploring can help enhance my experiences of the location and the book.

What the horse’s stance on a statue tells you

What the horse’s stance on a statue tells you

Absolutely nothing. You can stop telling people that you heard about how one hoof raised means the guy died in battle and that four hooves raised means the horse had magical flying powers. This urban legend is persistent (I’ve heard it from multiple tour guides in various countries), but it’s just not true.

Organic deliciousness at an Amsterdam market

Organic deliciousness at an Amsterdam market

Mmmmmm… cheese. I love it. Check out any food market in Europe and you’re likely to discover dozens of varieties you’ve never tried before.
This was definitely true for me on my first trip to Amsterdam’s famous Noordermarkt. This organic farmer’s market is located in the Jordaan quarter of Amsterdam and takes place rain or shine every Saturday. The friendly vendors were happy to give me a taste of various cheeses to help me choose which ones to buy.
Even if your accommodations don’t include a kitchen, the Noordermarkt organic market is definitely worth a visit for foodies visiting Amsterdam. The experience …read more
