This NYTimes article broke my heart today – to hear that the waste disposal problems around Naples are negatively affecting the quality of some buffalo mozzarella, one of Italy’s most beloved cheeses. Una tragedia!
The owner of Obiká, a mozzarella bar which is one of my favorite restaurants in Milan (and Rome), is interviewed for the article, and he makes it sound like establishments such as his, who only deal with high-quality sources of mozzarella, can still be trusted. Whew.

One of our stops on our recent trip to the Netherlands was the small city of Delft. Even though the sky was gray for most of the day, the town center was bustling and lively, partially thanks to the large outdoor market which snaked through the middle of town (the market is on every Thursday and Saturday). Delft is known for its blue and white porcelain and also as the home of the famous 17th century artist Vermeer.

With the low-cost airline boom in Europe, it’s pretty easy to hop on a plane and explore a new part of the continent. But that doesn’t mean train travel is a thing of the past – not by a long shot. As someone who has been stuck at the Athens airport during a strike just like today’s, I understand how frustrating it can be. No flights, trains, ferries, subways, buses… and a queue for a taxi that extends farther than you can see. Here are a few tips I’d have for someone in the same situation:

Relax. If your flight is canceled, it’s canceled. Stressing about the situation is not going to get you to your destination on time. You are likely to get to your destination in the end – it will just take longer than you thought.

Several unions, including air traffic controllers, are on strike throughout Greece today. Many domestic and international flights (both to and from Greece) have been canceled. City and intercity ground transport are interrupted, and ferries are also not running.
