I've seen a similar trick, where a loop is made out of the string, with one end of the loop placed under your foot, and the other end placed over the camera's lens. I've been using a mini-tripod - same size as this, but with flexible legs: http://www.apeshop.com/images/accessories/minitripod.jpg It's nice and light, and good for quick shots that need to be stable, as long as you have something to prop the camera up on...
