The biggest fire pliers punch in the world

Although mulled wine is more commonly know as Glühwein in the German-speaking world, there’s also a variant known as Feuerzangenbowle that can be found in certain cities (and at certain Christmas markets). Feuerzangenbowle literally translates to ‘fire pliers punch’, and is distinguished by the way in which sugar is added to the concoction. A large cone of sugar is soaked in alcohol and then set on fire on top of a metal grate-type-thingy over the punch. As the sugar cone burns, bits of flaming sugar drip off into the liquid below.
Although we arrived in Munich too late for any Christmas markets, we did manage to catch the tail end of the world’s largest Feuerzangenbowle at Isartor. It runs for about three weeks each year, ending in early January. If you missed out, you can always try making your own .
