Cheaper than flying to Schiphol Airport
Just like in other countries, flying to another (relatively nearby) airport may be better for your wallet in the Netherlands.

If you are planning to visit Amsterdam and find that flights to Schiphol Airport are pricey, you may want to consider checking flights to Eindhoven and Rotterdam Airports.
Cheap Flights to these airports can be found here: Cheap Flights to Eindhoven and Cheap Flights to Rotterdam.
And from those airports, you can make your way to Amsterdam.
Eindhoven to Amsterdam will cost you €18.50 for a single or €32.50 for a return.
“take a local bus (Hermes bus 401, 23 minutes, about four times per hour, €3.20 on board or €1.80 using a 15 strippenkaart) to the train station, from there take a train to Amsterdam (1:20 hour, four times per hour, single €16.80). Alternatively, take the express bus directly from the airport to Amsterdam central station, which takes 1:45 or 2:15 hours depending on the time of day. This service goes quite infrequently, see their website for a schedule.”
Rotterdam to Amsterdam will be around €15.00 for a single.
“take a city bus (RET bus 33, 26 minutes, every 10-20 minutes, €2.40 on board or €1.35 using a 15 strippenkaart) to Rotterdam Centraal train station, from there take a train to Amsterdam (about an hour, every 10-20 minutes, single €12.70.”
If you are not pressed for time and are open to a little bit of adventure, choosing flights to an alternative airport would not only be cheaper, it would also mean that you can add another European city in your list.

Generally if you use the budget airline over in Europe, Ryanair, germanwings etc you tend to fly into these smaller airports. Most people jump off the train and into the nearest bus towards the closest major city. I say explore the smaller city you flew into for a bit. You may be pleasantly surprised as I was with Girona Spain when flying into an airport near to Barcelona. Great city!
