Carnival in Basel, Switzerland

Basel is yet another one of the few European cities which hosts the best Carnivals in February. Fastnacht starts at 4am on the 26th (called Morgestraich) when electricity in Basel will be turned off.  The city will be lit by torchbearers.  The succeeding days will be spent with drums, whistles and bands of singers forcing everyone to listen to their music.  If you want the cliché carnival affair, you can join the kids on Tuesday. Just make sure that you’re dressed up and have your face painted.

Are you planning to take part in Basel’s pre-Lenten bacchanalia? If you are, here are a few tips on how you can keep the cost down while enjoying the Basler Fasnacht 2007:

  • WALK!  It may be a bit strenuous but not only would it be good for your health, you’d also experience Basel better this way. Not to mention the fact that you need not pay to walk. Besides, during Fasnacht, the trams do not go all the way to the inner city.
  • Wait until almost the end of the day to visit the museum of your choice so you can get in for FREE.
  • Eat for Cheap at the Mensa Universität Basel (school cafeteria), only open on weekdays; Migros Gourmet in Bahnhof SBB to self-cater.
  • Stay at the youth hostel is located in the St. Alban quarter.
