Top 10 Must Haves for the Budget Traveler

Depending on our own needs and priorities, we all have must-haves when travelling.  Apart from the obvious stuff like clothes, shoes and money, there are other things that others may not find useful but we just can’t go without.

In my case, below is my Top Ten List of Must Haves when Travelling on a Shoestring in Europe

  1. lightweight rain jacketbecause…
  2. duct tape - you’ll never know when you might need one; to repair ripped backpack, shoes that just gave up from too much mileage, etc.
  3. a roll of toilet paper – budget accommodation options have taught me a lesson of always being prepared
  4. earplugsbecause
  5. swiss knife – always handy to have one
  6. plastic bags – for all those stuff which could get wet.
  7. writing tools - to solve that language barrier and bad-at-charades problem
  8. bandanna - it goes with my backpack ;-) and helps me a lot in not spending too much time fixing myself
  9. padlock – for lockers at the hostel and/or the train station
  10. matches – especially useful when bunking it and sharing a toilet with fellow budget travelers.  Helps get that embarassing smell away when someone is outside waiting to use the same toilet cubicle.  In addition, it could become useful if I, god forbid, get stuck in the middle of nowhere.

What about you? What is on your top 10 list?
