Beer drinking in Finland

Beer drinking in Finland

Alcohol is very expensive in Finland.  Believe me, a budget traveller like you wouldn’t be regularly hanging out at the pub next door. A beer would cost around 5Euros.
Best would be to buy beer for 0.5Euro at supermarkets.
But if you really really need to save, drink tap water. It’s always drinkable and it’s FREE.

Private Home Stay in Croatia

Private Home Stay in Croatia

Julien Marchand asks,

“Hi! I’m planning a trip to Craotia over the summer and I’d like to know a little bit more about being hosted by the locales. How reliable is it? I know it’s mostly case-by-case, but are those offers worth it and is the quality relatively even from one local to another…? Thanks!”
There are three types of home stays being offered all over Croatia. Below are my personal opinion and recommendations regarding this type of accommodations.

portrait of an artist

So you are finally in Paris and you just HAVE to have your portrait done… just like in the movies.

Street artists flock to the city’s tourist spots. If you want one done, it’s easy to find an artist. Paris, with its wonderful ambience and numerous picturesque backdrops available, is perfect for this.
But… be careful.
There are some who are pretty good and you may be immensely happy with the result but, they may charge you the earth. Apart from watching artists at work to gauge the quality, it is also important to shop around. And when you finally find the artist …read more

Tourist Trap

Tourist Trap

Unscrupulous vendors have been known to charge tourists more than the real worth. It’s a con which a lot of tourists have fallen for. To be conned during a tightly-budgted trip could (for some) mean a meal lost. So, be very careful.
Tourist trap is a new category here at Europe String. Apart from tips on where to get the best prices, I’ll try to feature places that offers overpriced goods and services to tourists. Places we should avoid, at all cost.

Cheap eats in Budapest

Cheap eats in Budapest

In General, price level in Budapest is bargain-basement compared to its wealthier neighbors.  Despite the already low prices, it certainly wouldn’t hurt if you could save a few more Euros.
Beat those hunger pangs without worrying about the cost. A few Hungarian terms would do your pocket AND stomach a lot of good.

When looking for a place to eat, look for the following:

etkezde – small family run bistros which specializes in lunchtime dishes; cheap and unpretentious home-style cooking. One can can even order a half-sized portion
önkiszolgalo – a self-service canteen which serves local food at a low price
szendvicsbar – selling sandwiches to go

budget accommodations for the World Cup 2006

Now that the final draw has finally been er… drawn, you can now start planning your trip around the games schedule.  As expected, German tourism is now experiencing the onslaught of bookings for hotels, pensions in all the participating venues.  Apart from that, we are seeing the increase in prices and the realization that accommodation capacities are limited.
Should you be one of the lucky 5000 who won your tickets to the WM2006 at McDonald’s, you may now be wracking your brains (or pestering your friends) for the name of a friend of a friend of a friend who happens to live in …read more

Where gasoline is cheaper

Where gasoline is cheaper

Driving in Europe can be a joy — particularly in Germany, if you are a Schumacher wannabe – OR, it could easily turn into a nightmare. Not only because it could be nerve-wracking but also because it could be expensive. There are tons of ways to go around Europe on a budget. But with the current prices of gas, Car Travel — unless, of course, you share a car — isn’t really the cheapest option.
However, if you insist on driving around Europe, here are a few guidelines to help stretch that Euro a wee bit more:

Ingrid “Bandanna Girl” Diaz

Our very first featured bandanna girl/backpacker is none other than b5media’s resident Play-Girlz, Ingrid Diaz.
Like Ingrid, most backpackers are very social. The bandanna-wearing ones are cooler, though.
Meeting people — whether locals or fellow travellers — is a big part of the backpacking experience.  And connecting with like-minded globetrotters could help keep the costs down.  It’s the way to go in finding and sharing advices on cheap accommodation, off-the-road destinations, etc.

budget travel tip #2

budget travel tip #2

Travelling is exciting and yet, tiring. All those walking around and being perpetually on the move could drain the energies of even the fittest globetrotter.  Hence, the need to recharge by getting a good night’s sleep.
Problem is, this is sometimes impossible.  Light sleepers are especially in danger of being constantly bothered by a snoring dorm mate or that loud din coming from the bar next door.
One can never tell what is in store for one when booking that cheap hostel.  Apart from booking that nicer but more expensive hotel, the only way to get around this is to BRING EAR …read more
